The Language of Vision

With each lesson students examine elements and principles of art such as line, shape, form, space, light, color, and texture with a variety of visual arts media. In addition students demonstrate expressive qualities of mood and emotions. They will create a self-portrait, land/seascape, mixed media work, and sculpture. Each lesson is started with a 3 minute line-drawing warm-up.

Lesson Plans


LP 1 My Favorite Animal

Students will draw their favorite animal and paint it with watercolors, with emphasis being put on emotion they feel for the animal.

LP 2 Seascapes and Landscapes

Students will paint a landscape or seascape using tempera paints. Extra texture will be added by gluing paper bits and other natural fibers onto the paper before the paint is added.

LP 3 Visual Symmetry

Students will create a Valentine's Day card with a heart or hearts as an introduction to the idea of visual symmetry. They will learn how to create an image that is properly balanced. They will use both tempera paint and crayons.

LP 4 Self-Portrait

Students will paint a self-portrait with acrylic paints.

LP 5 Basic Clay Techniques

Students will be introduced to paperclay, an air-drying clay which can be painted after it hardens. They will make a pinch-pot and a picture frame, which can be decorated with three-dimensional add-ons such as flowers or dots.

LP 6 Painting the Sculptures

Students will paint their paperclay creations with acrylic paint.

LP 7 Preserving Sculpture Work

Students will seal their paperclay creations with an acrylic sealant and the picture frames will be glued to a backing board.
